Classic documentary films from the GPO archive led by the great John Grierson that encapulsate life in Britain in the 1930s and early war years. The GPO film unit was later absorbed into the Ministry of Information to become the Crown Film Unit. This programme features five films made during the period when the country's back was against the wall and invasion was areal threat. The are 'Britain Can Take It' - the anglicised version of the documentary 'London Can Take it (1940)' which was made for American consumption to assist Roosevelt's support for our beleagured islands; 'Britain at Bay (1940)'; 'Story of an Air Communique (1941)'; 'Christmas Under Fire (1941)'; 'Men of the Lightship (1940)'.
