This book recalls the story of the best-selling post-war A.E.C. single deck passenger chassis. That the A.E.C. ‘Reliance’ was a commercial success cannot be doubted, as its considerable sales over a 35-year period amply demonstrate, as well as the numbers still in use at the time this book is written. Many operators, not only in this Country but also around the World, have purchased the ‘Reliance’ and it has undoubtedly earned its place in the history of the bus and coach industry as a product of which Britain can be justly proud. As with most human endeavours, nothing is perfect, but the employees at Southall more often than not managed to get it right, if not initially then as part of the Company policy of continual development and improvement of its products. Written by Gerald Truran & Philip Platt, the book commences with a foreword by Bob Fryer, AEC’s Chief Designer during the period 1950-1960 and records the development and evolution of the chassis featuring vehicles of many long-gone coach and bus undertakings in an era when British technical excellency supported an industry whose products still found favour in the world market.
